I know the premise is that it's *mostly/only* about how historical China is depicted in media, but by its very nature you have to provide historical background and so there are times I'm not sure if you're still talking about depiction or not because it's not clearly stated which is which. As a result of that, you make a lot of historical claims that have been challenged by recent historians, some even further back than the current century, and it's not entirely clear whether you make those claims in the context of discussing cultural perception or as actual historical arguments... Esp. those concerning early modern to modern China (e.g. Cixi, the Self Strengthening Movement, Fall of the Ming dynasty, 百年國恥, etc). Even the unspoken premise of an essentially eternal "Chinese nation" needs problematizing here

Oh my! I just stumbled upon your review, and boy, am I grateful for it. Every single thing you pointed out is true. Being it in movies or tv series, when they decided to have women heroes, it was most often than not a man-up of the female character, not an exploration of her own authentic power and how that could be expressed. In the end, it is a disservice to all, men, women, society. Mulan the animation was quite close to my heart, for friendship reasons; so thank you for your heartfelt indignation - ☺though this is three years later 😍

Bravo and a standing ovation *clap clap*. I grew up watching wuxia and other Chinese films but having largely grown up in Australia, I've been mostly ignorant of the nuances surrounding the history of the Chinese empire and its many dynasties. This series of video essays has enlargened my view of Chinese history and the cultural touchstones throughout each. It was great to finally understand some of the historical and cultural rationales for the aesthetics depicted in the Chinese films I grew up watching. Thank you so much for doing this!!

It’s big miss too not talk about the infamous Qing policy of Tifayifu 剃发易服 in a visual-related video, for the longest time Chinese period dramas are divided into Qing and non-Qing, the hairstyle and clothing are so fundamentally changed during this period that make Qing the most obviously identifiable dynasty.

the last comment kinda hurts, the fact that china is still trying to "catch up" centuries later due to how far the decisions of the qing dynasty tripped them up. this is the main reason why we need to learn from history, and from the history of other nations

I'm sad the series is over. I love ancient Chinese history. It's fascinating to see how society is shaped by changing values, evolving art forms, and outsider involvement. I would love to see more videos focusing on specific stories of unique individuals in Chinese history, strange or interesting events, or regional festivals and customs throughout the ages.

The iconic tales from the Qing period came in the form of 2 TV series, The Tale of Book and Sword (书剑恩仇录) and 清宫残梦 (I can't find the English translation). Though the former is largely fictional, the series reminds me of the complexity of the huge Qing empire, and how people would have dealt with it. 清宫 was more historical and conveyed to me the stasis of the fading imperial system, which I was studying in the late 1970s. Both were also excellent in their attempts to be accurate in the costumes, hairstyles, and manners of the Qing.
